When NATSO’s Chairman of the Board asked me to step into the Interim CEO role, I accepted without hesitation. It represented an opportunity to give back to an industry that has given so much to me and my family.
My goal is to ensure a smooth leadership transition as Lisa Mullings moves on to pursue other opportunities, and I will continue to serve with that focus as long as the Board of Directors sees fit.
I want to emphasize to all NATSO members that we focus on serving each of you. This is your association. You nominate our board members, and we see ourselves as stewards of your association. My commitment is to work diligently on your behalf and prioritize your needs. Over the next 100 days, I'll be reaching out to each of you personally to understand what matters most to you. In addition to personal phone calls, be on the lookout for an invitation soon to our first virtual town hall meeting of 2025, where I can give you updates and get your input on what matters most to you and your business.
This industry has truly been a blessing. It has connected me with countless honorable people who work tirelessly to help keep America moving. Truck stops and travel centers are critical to our nation’s survival, and the people who own and operate them are essential to ensuring our country thrives.
I’ve been deeply connected to the travel center and truck stop industry since 1988, right after graduating from The Colorado College. My journey began with Love’s, then known as Love’s Country Stores, where I joined as a Manager in Training. Those nearly 10 years with Love’s — during what I like to call their formative years — shaped my foundation in this industry. Over the decades, I’ve had the privilege to hold executive roles in operations, merchandising, sales, and membership with companies like Petro Stopping Centers, Barjan LLC, Amerada Hess Oil, and TSC Global before joining NATSO.
At its core, NATSO exists to help members of all sizes succeed in one of the most competitive markets in the world. We are the only retail business that openly posts its leading product’s price for every competitor and customer to see. Our industry operates with a level of transparency that’s almost unheard of. Before customers enter our lots, they know what we charge for fuel, our primary product. It’s incredible and a testament to the unique challenges and opportunities we face. Together, through NATSO, we continue to build on that strength, helping our members navigate those challenges and thrive in a rapidly changing marketplace.
Best wishes,
Darren
